Anesthesiologist assistants are mid-level anesthesia providers who work under the direction of an anesthesiologist and participate in the provision of anesthesia. Anesthesiologist assistants work in hospitals of all sizes and assist anesthesiologists in a variety of settings and for a wide range of procedures. Only three states allow anesthesiologist assistants to prescribe drugs.

Anesthesiologist assistants duties:

There are a few accredited anesthesiologist assistant training programs in the United States. The National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA), provides the certification process for anesthesiologist assistants in the United States. All anesthesiologist assistant programs require either the Graduate Record Examination or Medical College Admission Test entrance exam and a bachelor’s degree with prerequisite course work in science, math, and English. Initial certification is awarded upon successful completion of the certifying examination administered by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants.
