Healing with Heart & Color: The Modern Art Therapist Career

 An Art Therapist uses creative techniques—drawing, painting, collage, sculpture—to help clients express themselves, reduce stress, improve emotional well-being, and work through trauma.

You’ll work with:

  • Children

  • Teens

  • Adults

  • Elderly individuals

  • People with disabilities

  • Patients in hospitals, schools, mental health clinics, nursing homes, or private practice 

    What Art Therapists Do

    Requirements (USA — 2025)

    1. Education

    Most employers require:

    • Master’s degree in Art Therapy
      or

    • A Master’s in Counseling/Psychology plus specialized art therapy coursework (approved by the Art Therapy Credentials Board — ATCB)

    2. Certification

    After your Master's, you pursue:

    • ATR — Registered Art Therapist

    • ATR-BC — Board Certified Art Therapist (advanced)

    3. State Licensing

    Because art therapy falls under mental health counseling, most states require:

    • LMHC / LPC / LPCC license

    • Supervised clinical hours (approx. 2,000–4,000 hrs)

    4. Skills Needed

    • Understanding of psychology and trauma
