Program Overview
College of Medical Arts currently offers two full-time Vocational Nursing programs scheduled over 48 weeks, five days per week, at approximately 34-36 hours per week. All schedules exclude holidays, vacation, and make-up time. Class size does not exceed 20 students. Regulations from the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) concerning student/teacher ratio in the clinical setting is 15:1. At CMA, we maintain a 10:1 ratio. The program is divided into three (3) semesters, each approximately 15 weeks in length. Each semester is comprised of prescribed subject matter that builds upon the previous term(s). Students must begin their training in semester one and progress sequentially through each semester until all semesters have been successfully completed. This is the fastest night and weekends program which enables you to work and attend the school at the same time, and is the most in demand today.
In order to enroll in our Program, a written exam will be given to you and you have to pass with a determined percentage to be admitted.
You have to be a legal resident, possess a Social Security Number and a TIN number and have a High School Diploma or a GED Certified Diploma.
The program consists of 1650 hours divided into three semesters. Due to recent changes in the Department of Education, all our instructors are highly qualified and our passing rate for the NCLEX exam is close to the maximum. Our new instructors include Directors from different hospitals and acute and sub-acute facilities, which enable you to have a hands-on experience in clinical and excellent training in theory, which now makes our college one of the best!
Seats are limited and most applicants enroll into the program a few months before school starts and we are encouraging you to do the same.
All of our staff and medical facilities are approved by BPPVE and the Board of Nursing.

Vocational Nursing Program
The three-semester Vocational Nursing program is designed to prepare the student for beginning practice in nursing care. Theory content provides each student with a basic understanding of the roles and responsibilities of vocational nurses in providing health care to all age groups. After course completion and licensure, students are prepared to function completely and skillfully in a wide variety of health care settings.

Prerequisites for Admission:
Eligibility for MATH 54A or MATH 56 by either successfully completing MATH 81 or through the assessment process. Completion of ENGL 52 or higher or through the writing assessment process with a score of 65 or above. Transcripts Must be at least 17 years of age by the time of the licensure exam. High school diploma (or GED or equivalent) or Associate Degree. Completion of Human Biology (BIO 5) or Human Anatomy (BIO 12A) with a C grade or better. (Please note: This prerequisite will change beginning with the August 2010 class. It will be Anatomy, BIO 12A, exclusively.) Completion of Nutrition (FCS 11) with a C grade or better within the past five years. Completion of Medical Terminology (OA 45) with a C grade or better. Pass a physical exam and complete required immunizations. Background check and drug screening prior to the start of the program. Completion of a Transcript Evaluation Form by Counseling Services if any of the prerequisite classes have been taken at any other college other than College of the Siskiyous. Must be able to provide own transportation to and from clinical facilities.

Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to take the NCLEX PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses) to obtain licensure, as required for the practice of nursing. Nursing theory guides clinical practice. The Vocational Nursing Program is a full-time, intensive, three semester program that includes classroom and clinical hours plus Skills Lab hours every semester. Students are enrolled in nursing courses an average of 29 hours per week. Classes generally take place Monday through Thursday. Class hours may vary from semester to semester, however, most theory classes are held Monday and Thursday for 4.5 hours each day. Clinical hours generally meet Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Skills Lab hours vary according to classroom availability. Generally, there are no theory or clinical classes held on Fridays. Changes in scheduling may be necessary during the semester to accommodate a variety of learning experiences. The LVN program is designed to provide the student with the basic knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of a Licensed Vocational Nurse (DOT code: 079.347-014) in a health care environment. The program is approved by the BVNPT as an accredited training program, the completion of which meets the minimum requirements set forth as necessary for application to take the Vocational Nurse License examination.
The program is presented in a quarter credit hour, standard term format consisting of four consecutive quarters. The program utilizes an integrated, sequential curriculum presented in theory, "hands on" practical lab and clinical experience formats.
The program presents instruction in: anatomy & physiology, nutrition, psychology, normal growth and development, nursing fundamentals, nursing process, communication, patient education, pharmacology, medical-surgical nursing, communicable diseases, gerontological nursing, rehabilitation nursing, pediatric nursing, leadership and supervision.

Program Detail
The full-time program length is 15 months of academic coursework and clinical rotations. Upon successful graduation, the student will be eligible to take the Licensing Exam for Vocational Nurses (NCLEX-PN).
The potential student will be number-rated on the following:-
Fulfilled all pre-requisite courses Financial obligations in place Family obligations in place TEAS test score Previous academic history / grades
Each applicant for the Vocational Nursing Program must: Be at least 17-years old Present proof of a 12th grade education or its equivalent (Foreign graduates must have their high school and college transcript s evaluated for US equivalency. Complete the pre-requisite courses: Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology; pharmacology; and Life Span (Human Growth & Development) Pass the TEAS test with a minimum of 60% Submit an application for admission to the VN Program Be a Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant, or show other proof acceptable Undertake a placement interview Submit a complete physical examination and vaccination record (Chest x-ray must be current within 3 -6 months of start of class) Submit a copy of a current CPR card Finger printting/Background check must be done

Current California Certified Nursing Assistants who have completed program prerequisites are eligible to apply. The curriculum is designed to prepare the CNA to function as a LVN. Students must complete the state mandated hours in classroom and hospital experience in order to be eligible to take the state board examination required for licensure.
