Emphasis is placed upon the application of the nursing process using Maslow’s framework within the context of the vocational nursing scope of practice, the healthcare environment, critical thinking, the caring role, and basic nursing skills and procedures, including physical assessment. Nursing II is designed to provide the student with a foundation in medical-surgical nursing. Topics include general care of patients having problems with pain, cancer, immobility, fluid and axed electrolyte imbalances. Emphasis is placed upon care of patient with disorders of the skin, endocrine glands, blood, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, utilizing the nursing process within Maslow’s framework. Nursing III is a continuation of Medical-Surgical Nursing A. Emphasis is placed upon care of patients with muculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, neurological, eye and ear, urological, and reproductive disorders and patients with AIDS, utilizing the nursing process within Maslow’s framework. Nursing IV is designed to provide the senior student with basic knowledge in several specialty areas: family nursing, pediatrics, mental health, home health, hospice and rehabilitation. Emphasis is placed upon care of these patients utilizing the nursing process within the Maslow’s framework. Other important topics include leadership and supervision and career issues for the vocational nurse. The CCCC Vocational Nursing Program is approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. Upon completion of the program, the student must successfully pass a comprehensive, mandated exam (NCLEX-PN) to receive the title of Licensed Vocational Nurse.
Licensed Vocational Nurses often continue their health career education to become Registered Nurses. The field of nursing at both the LVN and RN levels offers a wide variety of employment opportunities. If you are interested in continuing your career in nursing, please consult with a member of the counseling staff in the Counseling Center (760-384-6219) to insure that you take the appropriate prerequisite courses. The Vocational Nursing Program is a full-time, intensive, three semester program that includes classroom and clinical hours plus Skills Lab hours every semester. Students are enrolled in nursing courses an average of 29 hours per week. Classes generally take place Monday through Thursday. Class hours may vary from semester to semester, however, most theory classes are held Monday and Thursday for 4.5 hours each day. Clinical hours generally meet Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Skills Lab hours vary according to classroom availability. Generally, there are no theory or clinical classes held on Fridays. Changes in scheduling may be necessary during the semester to accommodate a variety of learning experiences. Students may also choose to complete the college's educational requirements for an Associate's Degree. Cerro Coso Community College does not offer a part-time program for student vocational nurses
