A student is granted Admitted status by the Office of Admissions after all documents have been received, the applicant's admission file has been reviewed, and all admission requirements have been met. All materials to obtain admission should be submitted by the first day of class. No student may begin study without admission being granted. This provides ACN the necessary information to begin building student records and maintaining compliance with all federal and state bureau regulations. All students are provided the opportunity to communicate with a counselor prior to enrollment and throughout the duration of their program. This advisement will provide students with a preliminary evaluation of their academic status prior to admission and any requirements they must satisfy for both admission to and the completion of their program.

The Vocational Nursing Program is a full-time, 40-week program in California designed to enable students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies related to enhancing the health and well-being of individuals and families.
Duties within the scope of practice for a vocational nurse typically include, but are not limited to, provision of basic hygienic and nursing care; measurement of vital signs; basic client assessment; sample collection; monitoring client nutritional status; data collection, report and documentation; performance of prescribed medical treatments; administration of prescribed medications; and, performance of non-medicated intravenous therapy & blood withdrawal (requires separate Board certification).
The program has classroom/theory instruction and required clinical experiences to prepare the student to become a safe and competent entry-level practitioner.

Vocational Nursing is a career that provides exciting and challenging opportunities in health care agencies. The program prepares graduates to work in hospitals, convalescent homes and clinics under the direction of registered nurses and physicians. Students must receive a minimum grade
of “C” or better in all required core courses and the specifi c courses listed as program electives in order to qualify for the degree or certificate.
The three-semester Vocational Nursing curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses. This is the examination required by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians
Students must be admitted to the nursing program before enrolling in vocational nursing courses. Information about the admissions process is available in the Health Sciences offi ce. The program is accredited by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). Graduates receive a certificate of achievement from the College and are recommended as qualifi ed for the national licensure examination. Students must maintain a minimum grade of “C” in each required course to graduate. A minimum grade of “C” in clinical and theory is mandatory.
The BVNPT may deny licensure to individuals who have been convicted of a felony. An individual who has such a conviction and who is seeking admission to the nursing program should contact the Board to receive advice about their status.

This allied health care program is designed to prepare men and women for entry into occupations that require employees to have training and skills in vocational nursing. Not only have physicians become more reliant in vocational nurses, but their services are also being requested by hospitals. Prospective students are encouraged to visit the institutions campus to receive a tour and to discuss personal educational and occupational plans with school personnel prior to enrolling or signing enrollment agreements. Theory and Laboratory are taught residentially.
Program ObjectiveThe objective of the vocational nursing program is to provide students with the skills and knowledge that will enable them as graduates to qualify for positions as a vocational nurse. Our students will be trained in vocational nursing procedures. This training will allow our students the capability of filling a variety of entry-level position, such as vocational nursing. This program is intended for those students who have a high school diploma or GED. Experience in the field is necessary. Perspective students must have successfully completed a college level anatomy and physiology course with a GPA of 2.0 or better. At the completion of this course, the student will receive a certificate of completion.

Vocational NursingVocational nursing education prepares the graduate to provide services to those who need healthcare. As needs are varied so are educational programs, which may proceed from the simpler to the more complex in accordance with the career ladder concept.
The progression reads: nurse assistant, licensed vocational nurse, registered nurse, and other nurses with Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Doctorate in Nursing and special certifications. The vocational nurse practices under the direction of a licensed physician or a registered nurse.
Vocational Nursing (VN) is a three-semester program after the prerequisite courses have been completed. Students may also choose to complete the general education requirements of the College and obtain an Associate of Liberal Arts Degree. The College does not award an AA in Vocational Nursing. Consult the Bakersfield College Catalog or the Counseling Center for specific requirements.
Upon successful completion of the VN Program, graduates are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses for licensure as a Vocational Nurse in the State of California.

Presently, the following are minimal requirements to enter the Licensed Vocational Nurse program. (Requirements may be subject to change).
High School Diploma or GED
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age
Students with a high school diploma earned outside of the United States need to provide legal documentation that their education is equal to a 12th grade education in the U.S.
Pass a pre-entrance test, which includes reading comprehension, math, language and spelling (TABE-Test of Basic Education Assessments).
Individuals having experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified Nurse Assistant or Emergency Medical Technician is recommended.
