Registered Dental Assisting Programs are designed to instruct women and men with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform as dental health care paraprofessionals.
Students are taught to assist in all phases of general dentistry and dental specialties including prosthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, and pediatric dentistry.
Through the Registered Dental Assisting Program students will be taught to perform in expanded functions, trained and licensed in taking dental x-rays, and certified in coronal polishing.
The preventive, restorative,business, and employment aspects of dental assisting are also included. Upon completion of the Program students will be eligible to take the California State Board Examination for licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant (R.D.A.) and the Dental Assisting National Board Certification (C.D.A.).
The Registered Dental Assisting Program at San Jose City College has full accreditation status from the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and is approved by the Dental Board of California.
Students are admitted to the program in the fall and spring semester. Advisory Level 2 Basic Language Skills arecritical for entry into DENT 151, 152, and 153, as well as all other Dental Assisting courses. It is recommended thatstudents planning to enter the program take the placement test as early as possible to determine their level.
Those needing to improve their language skills may do so in courses offered by the college prior to admissions to the program.
Students are responsible for their own transportation to clinical facilities. Students should have current certification in C.P.R. and need current vaccinations before entering the second semester |

In some unusual races against time, SkillsUSA competitors identified dental instruments, repaired semi-trucks and prepared meals last month in Kansas City, Kansas.
The Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College took 14 students to the national competition and three of them walked away with medals.
The competition tests the skills and knowledge of vocational students from across the country in more than 90 different categories.
“It was huge,” said Karen Peterson, 21, of Huntsville. “It was really cool to walk around and see so many competitions.”
Peterson took a silver medal in dental assisting. She is also a student at Weber State University and hopes to be an orthodontist one day.
Her adviser, OWATC dental occupations coordinator Brenda Fell, said this year’s dental assisting competition included 17 skills such as making impressions, identifying teeth and mounting X-rays.
“We did not know ahead of time what the 17 skills would be so students needed to be prepared to do anything,” Fell said.
Peterson’s medal makes the ninth dental assistant winner from the OWATC in the last 10 years, Fell said. |

| Dental assistant orientation

DOWNEY—An orientation for students interested in registering for Downey Adult School’s Clinical Dental Assistant class.
The class will prepare students for entry-level positions as clinical dental assistants or dental biller/front office coordinators.
Laboratory procedures such as dental instrumentation, taking impressions, mixing dental cements, four-handed dentistry, and chair-side dental assisting procedures are among the topics covered.
The program includes 240 hours of clinical hands-on work in a real dental office. The class is approved by the Dental Board of California and the Dental Assisting National Board. For more information, call (562) 940-6200. |

| Fort dental lab crafts teeth for soldiers, families around world

They are called pearly whites, but all teeth are not the same color or translucency.
When creating a crown or a bridge, technicians at Fort Gordon's Fisher Dental Laboratory may use several shades of porcelain to get the desired color and shading, according to Col. Edward Chesla, the head of the Army's only dental lab.
"It's an art, and it's a science," he said.
With a staff of almost 100, the dental lab is a busy place, filling orders for crowns, dentures, bridges and retainers needed by soldiers and their families all over the globe.
"We usually have about 1,000 crowns working at one time," said Col. Chesla.
If the number goes above 1,000, crowns are sometimes manufactured by outside dental labs, but that doesn't happen very often.
More than half the lab's staff are active-duty military. They've completed dental assistant training and are adding another specialty by training at the lab.
Creating crowns and other dental prosthetics is a multistep process that could begin as far away as Afghanistan or Iraq.
"We have dentists over there who take care of patients," said Col. Chesla.
Dentists in the field make impressions of teeth, which are sent back to Fort Gordon via Federal Express. Then the artisans at the post's dental lab take turns creating the needed piece.
