A nurse routinely performs free cholesterol and blood pressure checks for employees.
    Wednesday
As a nurse and the wellness program manager for the city of Charleston, Jan Park is charged with assisting employees in maintaining healthy, active lifestyles.

Her responsibilities include developing, implementing and monitoring the effectiveness of wellness initiatives, as well as actively recruiting employees to participate in these programs.

Park has taken her message of living a healthy lifestyle to all employees, and she routinely performs free cholesterol and blood pressure checks for employees.

Some of these workers are not aware they may have diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

On one occasion, Park tested an employee’s blood pressure and found it to be dangerously elevated. She advised the employee that he should go to the hospital immediately. The employee had no transportation and no family members were available to take him.

Ultimately, Park convinced the employee to allow her to drive him to a medical facility so that he could receive the care he needed.

Most of Park’s career has been spent working in intensive care units where she saw firsthand the physical, emotional and financial stress that critically-ill patients and their families go through.

“It is exciting to be on the other end of the health care spectrum, teaching preventive health care and wellness, giving people the tools they need to keep themselves out of the ICU,” Park said.

“What continues to inspire me is when I get a call from a co-worker who says, ‘I’m ready to quit smoking. Can you help?’ The employee with diabetes who dropped his A1C four points with proper eating and exercise,” Park said. “… The co-worker that achieved his weight loss goal and subsequently was able to come off his diabetic medications. The employee who yells at me from across the parking garage that their ‘pedometer has hit 10,000 steps
    today.’”

Through education and investing in preventive care measures, Park and the city of Charleston are helping employees take charge of their health and be accountable for their lifestyle choices.
