| I am a third-year nursing student atUof C and a rural home health aide

"Tories' grand plan for health a little unsettling," Don Braid, Opinion, Dec. 16.
As I sat down to scarf a quick lunch between home care clients, I grabbed the Herald and nearly choked after reading about Ron Liepert's plan to decrease the number of nurses in Alberta.
Is this man serious? I am a third-year nursing student atUof C and a rural home health aide. I see every day how much our system is struggling to meet the demand for health care, particularly in caring for the elderly in acute care facilities and at home. The thought that we could somehow manage with fewer nurses is utterly ludicrous.
Has he not noticed that we are in the midst of a nursing shortage? Is Liepert trying to chase RNs from our province? Perhaps he should take a page from Saskatchewan, which is offering grants and bursaries ranging from $10,000 to $15,000, as well as relocation assistance of $5,000 to $10,000, to RNs willing to commit to working for two years in a rural or hard-to-recruit position. These offers are open to new grads as well; $15,000 to $25,000 in recruitment bonuses, a lower cost of living, and a province that seems to value its nurses?
How can I not consider that option?
Are you paying attention, Mr. Liepert? I will have my diploma in December 2010. Please don't force me to take it to Saskatchewan source
