The University of Saskatchewan’s college of nursing has announced a $1.15-million initiative to assist nurses in developing regions of the Caribbean.
Along with the International Development Research Centre, the Canadian Nurses Association and SaskTel, the college will be providing nurses in five Caribbean countries with personal digital assistants (PDAs) linked to a wireless network.
“Nurses in these countries struggle to find up to date medical information. If their hospitals have medical libraries at all, the books are often out of date. In some cases they have to rely on public libraries. All of this cuts down on the time and quality of care they are able to invest in their patients,” Pammla Petrucka, an associate U of S professor at the head of the project, said in a press release.
“With the PDAs, these nurses will now have at their fingertips on up to date information for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and HIV-AIDS. They will be able to participate in local and global discussion groups on health issues . . . (and) be better able to assess patient status, analyze trends and identify problem areas for client care,” she added.
The five countries involved are Barbados, the Dominican Republic, the Commonwealth of Dominica, St. Kitts-Nevis and St. Lucia.
The initiative also includes consultations with Canadian researchers aimed at strengthening the knowledge base of local nurses and health-care providers in the Caribbean. source
