Student nurses will be trained in the Second Life-virtual world

Student nurses will be trained in how to deal with real patients by working with virtual beings on Second Life.
An island set up specifically for the trainees has been 'built' on the popular virtual world – helpfully called 'nurse island'.

The idea has been developed by lecturers at Glasgow Caledonian University, who hope the island world will be open for new nursing students from next year,

Jacqueline McCallum, senior lecturer in clinical simulation, said in the Telegraph: "We are using it to help students with decision-making."

A YouTube video of the online hospital environment has been posted with virtual representations of lecturers and students explaining how the world will work.

Glasgow Caledonian has previously used Second Life as a way of publicising the university by creating a virtual campus for prospective students to find their way around.

Students are also able to attend virtual tutorials using the internet and the university showcases its embracing of Second Life on the homepage of its website.

"Staff and students are already 'building' the university on Second Life, complete with a perfect representation of our award-winning Saltire Centre," a spokesperson for the university said.

"Caledonian Academy will lead a competition to explore how we can exploit the potential of 3D environments for learning, but in the meantime construction of the university's Second Life site is proving to be a valuable learning experience for students in itself." source
