most people trust nurses more than anyone
    Monday
    Who do you trust?

According to the annual Gallup poll on honesty and ethics in professions, most people trust nurses more than anyone.

Pollsters graded 21 professions on honesty and ethical standards by the answers received in the nationwide survey. Nurses topped the list by a wide margin. Eighty-four percent of respondents rated nurses very high or high. Only 1 percent rated the caregivers low.

The poll suggests people willingly put themselves in the hands of medical professionals. Not far behind nurses were pharmacists, followed by high school teachers and medical doctors.

In fact, professionals the public depends on for personal care, education and safety got great ratings.

Here's the top seven: Nurses, pharmacists, high school teachers, medical doctors, clergy, police officers and funeral directors.

Journalists did OK, trailing the funeral directors and accountants. Mostly, journalists are perceived as average when it comes to trust and ethics. Journalists do strive to maintain accountability and build trustworthy reputations. Maybe print journalists can claim electronic journalism makes the profession seem mediocre.

Lawyers were in the middle of the pack, with more people trusting them than not.

Members of Congress are sandwiched between business executives and stockbrokers, an indication that people are not happy with the economic mess and assign considerable blame to those three professions -- and bankers.

Lowest on the list are lobbyists. Few people trust them. They were rated high or average by 32 percent of those polled; 64 percent gave them low scores. The public keeps telling Congress that lobbyists are too influential in deciding the course of government.

Perhaps Capitol Hill will get the message.

Government officials should strive to care for the American people as good as nurses. Then we'd get somewhere.

Trust is earned. Ethics must be demonstrated. Americans love their nurses.

Maybe the perceived fat cats in other professions need to learn more about bedside manners.

People don't react well when they think they're being ignored, trampled or belittled.source
