| the concrete steps to get Kilgore College nursing program back on track

In August of 2008, the Kilgore College Nursing program's status changed from full approved status to approved status with warning.
Dr. Bill Holda, KC president, said the State Board of Nursing Standards requires a passing rate of 80 percent or better to maintain a full approved status.
"KC has historically maintained a 90 percent or better passing rate on the state boards," said Holda. "But with the demands for nurses, KC increased class sizes to reduce the waiting list for students, compressed the curriculum and offered a simulated state board test prior to students taking the state boards."
Holda said the problem was with the simulated test, which did not parallel the state test well enough to allow students to pass the state boards on the first try.
"KC's passing rate then dropped into the high 70 percentile, which created the warning status," said Holda.
The college is now offering an exit strategy that uses the Health Education Systems, Inc. (HESI) for simulated testing prior to taking the state boards and all students are required to pass this test prior to receiving a certificate from KC's nursing program and prior to taking the state boards, said Holda.
State board personnel worked with KC on site to help initiate these strategies, he said.
"With the new testing strategy, realigned curriculum and a simulated lab, KC has already exceeded the 80 percent pass rating for the classes ending in 2008," said Holda. "Based on these pass ratings, the state board will meet in either January or April and at that time will change KC's status from approved full with warning to full approved."
Holda said there are currently more than 200 jobs available in the health care field for nurses within 15 to 20 miles of KC.
"I believe we have taken the concrete steps to get KC's nursing program back on track, but KC will continue to strive to get the nursing program back to its traditional 90-plus passing rates we have been known for," said Holda. source
