the nursing program at Monroe Community College
    Sunday
Mary Tantillo vividly remembers the rigors of the nursing program at Monroe Community College when she was a young student.
“I cried every week during clinical,” Tantillo said. “It was hard, I was 18 and people were dropping like flies in my nursing class: Even adults who worked in health care dropped out.”
Tantillo hung in, however, and the MCC nursing program helped launch a career that has led her current position as director of the Western New York Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders.
After graduating from MCC in 1980, Tantillo went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Nazareth College; a master’s in nursing at the University of Rochester and a Ph.D. in nursing from Adelphi University on Long Island.
“I really felt strongly that what I did at MCC gave me a strong platform to jump into what I did next,” she said. “I wanted to let the people in the community know how much I got from MCC, and that they played a big role in who I am today.”
Tantillo, who lives in Pittsford, is one of 15 alumni honored by the college in October as part of “Giving Back. Moving Forward — MCC Alumni Contributing to the Community.”
Tantillo got her start helping people with eating disorders while she was working on the Behavioral Therapy Unit at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
“I never had an eating disorder, but I understood the issues underneath,” she said. “Somehow, I could just tap into what was going on. The biggest thing, I think, was I really wanted to make a difference in women’s mental health.”
Tantillo worked as director of the Unity Eating Disorder program in Rochester from 2000 to 2004, and since then has been director of the Western New York Comprehensive Care Center for Eating Disorders, based at the U of R Medical Center. She calls that job “the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Tantillo also is an associate professor of clinical nursing at the University of Rochester’s School of Nursing and a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at its School of Medicine and Dentistry.
“When I was sitting at nursing school in MCC, this was my dream and I feel like l’m living my dream now,” Tantillo said.
