Carlsbad Medical Center's Nursing Leadership Group recently awarded $500 scholarships to New Mexico State University at Carlsbad nursing program students. Recipients are Eileen Andazola, Shay McClintock, Stacy McIntire and Nancie Parraz, all of Carlsbad. Scholarship selection criteria included a demonstrated commitment to the nursing profession, academic record and financial need, as well as the student's essay expressing a strong desire to contribute to Carlsbad area professional nursing and healthcare. Andazola gained early experience with the healthcare industry working in the Emergency Room of CMC several years ago as a registration clerk. Her interest grew to include patient care, and the goal of obtaining financial stability and owning her own home has motivated her to complete the nursing program.
McClintock is pursuing a bachelor's degree in nursing and plans to specialize in trauma and emergency care. McClintock said she chose this specialty because, "This is a very critical time when the care the person receives could mean life or death, and a patient needs a competent, passionate and caring nurse who will fight the odds to save another's life."
McIntire is currently pursuing her associate's degree in nursing, and upon completion of the nursing program she would like to work in the Intensive Care Unit at CMC.
Parraz, a non-traditional student who, at age 41, is working towards an associate's degree in nursing, said, "Nursing is a great responsibility which demands that no shortcuts in rendering care be taken, nor any compromises made," so that she may give the absolute best of herself to nurture her patients.
The Nursing Leadership Group represents nurses and administrative staff from a variety of CMC departments. The team is chaired by Nguyet Wickenkamp, R.N., of CMC Surgical Services. The NLG meets monthly with the mission of supporting nursing careers in the Carlsbad region.
