Lake Regional Health System will host the 2008 Winter Nursing Camp from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Dec. 29-30. The camp, funded by a Neighborhood Assistance Program grant, is designed for high school students who are interested in pursuing nursing careers.
Throughout this two-day camp, participants will gain an understanding nursing fundamentals as they visit nursing units, job shadow experienced nurses, learn about state-of-the-art equipment used daily by nurses and interact with staff. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and engage in appropriate care activities.
Students also will gain hands-on nursing experience in the interactive and challenging skills lab. Using the training equipment, students will learn the proper technique for inserting intravenous catheters, performing head-to-toe patient and wound assessments, checking blood pressures and more.
“It’s great to see the students’ eyes light up as they master new skills and share job shadowing experiences with the group,” said Lake Regional’s Nurse Mentor Beth Pettitt, R.N., BSN, BSBA. “Many past participants have said they decided to pursue a career in nursing after attending our nursing camp.”
Each participant will receive a goodie bag filled with an assortment of items, including a set of scrubs. The camp is free, but class size is limited to 20 participants. To request an application or more information, contact Beth Pettitt at 573-348-8060 or bpettitt@lakeregional.com by Friday, Nov. 21.
