Shenandoah University has teamed with Inova Health System to support the university’s nursing program and boost the nurse count in the area.

The bachelor’s degree program will be offered at Shenandoah’s Northern Virginia campus at a new facility next to Inova Loudoun Hospital in Leesburg. The private university in Winchester enrolls about 3,000 students in six schools.

“The proximity of Shenandoah University’s new campus to Inova Loudoun Hospital will prove very convenient for new nurses,” said Randy Kelley, chief executive, Inova Loudoun Hospital, in a statement. “Our hope is that these nurses will not only train here, but will become future employees to provide a valuable and much needed service here in Loudoun County.”

Under the agreement, Shenandoah University will up enrollment in its second-degree Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing program from 30 to 60 students in 2009 and up to 90 students by 2010. It will also reduce tuition by 15 percent for second-degree bachelor’s of science in nursing (BSN) degree students awarded Inova scholarships.

The Falls Church-based health system will provide scholarships for up to 25 qualified second-degree BSN students in 2009, and up to 30 qualified students in 2010 who commit to working at Inova for two years. Inova will also give $500,000 over two years to fund things like new classrooms and administrative spaces at the university’s new Leesburg facility.
