    Western Illinois University -the bachelor of science in nursing degree

    On Wednesday administrators at Western Illinois University celebrated Tuesday’s Illinois Board of Higher Education vote to add two local degree programs.

    The hope is to begin offering both the bachelor of science in nursing degree and the bachelor of science in engineering degree in the fall of 2009.

    Previously WIU was able to offer only the preliminary course work for both degrees, and students would have to transfer to another university to complete it.

    “There is a long history of a desire for a nursing program at WIU,” said President Al Goldfarb, who added requests date back to the 1970s and 1980s. “It’s very clear that nursing is a high demand, high need area.”

    The nursing degree will require 125 semester hours of course work and is for students seeking to become registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree. School officials said the first two years of the program will include general education and nursing support classes.

    Partnerships are also being developed with local hospitals and nursing homes to provide students with supervised clinical experience opportunities during their study.

    McDonough District Hospital Board Chairman Dr. Donald Dexter said Wednesday the degree news is exciting because it helps the Macomb hospital avoid the severe impact of a projected nursing shortage. He added that by 2020, it’s expected a national shortage of 1 million nurses will exist.

    WIU School of Nursing Director Lea Monahan said the nursing degree program still needs to be approved by several regulatory agencies, including the Center for Nursing. The school recently completed a feasibility study of its program for the center, which was mailed after Tuesday’s vote.
    Thirty students are expected to enroll in the new degree program in its first year with 135 enrolled by its fifth year.

    The engineering degree is a 133-semester hour program at WIU’s Macomb and Quad Cities campuses. Thirty students are estimated to enroll in the degree program during its first year.
