Eastern Health says it's too soon to tell what impact the nurses' job action will have on its operations. The nurses have stopped doing some of the things which they categorize as non-nursing duties, such as clerical work and cleaning. The Nurses' Union will add more items to the list a week from yesterday. It's the fallout from a contract dispute with the provincial government. Eastern Health's Steve Dodge says the main concern is patient care.

Meantime, a member of the housecleaning team at St. Clare's Hospital says unless it happens at rural clinics and hospitals, nurses do none of the household type chores. Tim told VOCM Night Line with Linda Swain the union members would file a grievance if the nurses were doing their work, the same as the nurses would file one if other staff members were doing the nurses' work. Tim says he has nothing against the nurses and does feel they deserve a raise. He says their service is available to nurses all the time. Tim says one person is on call at the hospital from 12am to 8pm and the nurses simply need to page that individual if they are needed.

NAPE says Licensed Practical Nurses, or LPN's, are being lost in the shuffle. Their union president, Carol Furlong, told VOCM BackTalk, LPN's are not being recognized for their contribution to the health care system. source
