the number of women joining top professions are soaring
    Tuesday
The workplace is changing, as the number of women joining top professions are soaring, new statistics show.

The sectors of law and medicine feature highest with 61% of new law trainees and 60% of newly-qualified solicitors being female last year. Women made up 61% of trainee GPs and 59% of first year house officers last year.

Similarly, 5,128 women students accepted a place at medical and dentistry school in 2007 compared to 3,929 men.

Meanwhile, only 13% of newly-qualified primary teachers and 38% of newly-qualified secondary teachers are men, leaving many fearing that young boys are lacking positive male role models.
The gender revolution in the workplace is thought to be the result of girls overtaking boys at school and university, greater career ambitions among women and more open recruitment practices.

Dr Mark Batey, of Manchester Business School, predicted that women would dominate the professions over the next ten years. He said: "They will begin to hold far more positions of power in the workplace.
"Employers realise that women are more suited to the modern workplace, where the emphasis is on the qualities of team-work, leadership skills, communication and emotional intelligence in which they excel rather than the intellectual ability or physical strength on which men have relied.

"Already employers, such as law firms, are struggling to find good male candidates for vacancies because women are not only getting better academic qualifications, they have a better range of skills."

Dr Batey warned that it is men who now urgently need help to avoid falling too far behind their female counterparts in education and at work.
He said: "Ministers must take note of these figures and do more to support boys at school to stop them falling off the ladder. "On the positive side, I think we will see a re-alignment of gender roles, with men taking greater responsibility for child care and running the home." However, soaring numbers of women entering the professions has yet to lead to equality in the highest positions of power.

Fewer women are reaching the top in politics, the judiciary and policing than a year ago, a recent report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission found.
There was also a fall in the number of women running councils, health bodies, police forces, unions and other professional bodies, according to the report.source
