Five Morgan Community College students seeking careers in nursing have been selected to receive scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year.
The recipients were chosen on the basis of one or more criteria: academic performance, health care career goals and financial need.
Lena Phillips and Terri Tedford were each awarded $2,000 Williams Family Foundation Scholarships.
Tedford is finishing her second year of the MCC nursing program, and Phillips is beginning her quest for an associate degree in nursing.
Tedford is a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and is on the President’s List for academic achievement. Tedford’s passion for enriching lives through music as a talented musician, songwriter and recording artist is now directed toward the art of nursing.
Phillips is a 1998 Fort Morgan High School graduate who is returning to school with a clear goal in mind — that of becoming a registered nurse. Recent work experience has been with the clinical care operations team at Northern Colorado Medical Center while completing her prerequisites for the nursing program and raising a family.
Brittnee Krehmeyer and Cari Tatkenhorst were awarded Gramlich Nursing Scholarships for $600 and $1,000, respectively.
Krehmeyer expects to graduate with her associate degree in nursing (ADN) in May 2009. She has been an MCC student since 2006, when she began taking college classes while still in high school. When she graduated from FMHS, she had already earned 42 credits at MCC. Her volunteer time has been at Colorado Plains Medical Center, nursing homes and clinics as well as helping restore vandalized areas of the local cemetery.
Tatkenhorst, a Brush High School graduate, has a love for farm life and the desire to become a registered nurse. Her school activities have been divided between FFA and HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America). Her goal is to work in an intensive care unit or in the emergency room at a hospital. While preparing herself for a health career, Tatkenhorst has been a cadet for the Morgan County Ambulance Service.
Bridget Sandoval was selected to receive the Robert and Jan Datteri Nursing Scholarship for $500.
Sandoval is a full-time student and mother of four children ages 3 to 9. Sandoval completed first-year nursing and expects to graduate in the spring with her ADN. Her academic success is evident by her recognition on the Dean’s List and the Vice President’s List. She is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa honor society and serves as the historian in the Student Nursing Organization.
Registration for the fall semester at MCC is nearly complete with classes beginning Aug. 25. The final new-student orientation session and weekend registration day will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23. Online registration is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at www.morgancc.edu. What is the typical salary for a Licensed Vocational Nurse ? How do I prepare for the job? |
