CARE courses move the immigrant nurse into the workplace as quickly as possible
    Thursday
Effective communication is important in any job. But in the hospital, communicating effectively could save someone’s life.

“Especially in our profession, language is really very important,” said Reyna Dy, a graduate of a communications course for foreign nurses. “There should always be an open communication between our patients and the nurses.

“We really do ask questions a lot ... It would be difficult for a nurse if you don’t have the knowledge of how to make the patient open up for the questions you are asking.”

Dy, a native of the Philippines, studied Workplace Communication Skills for Internationally Educated Nurses last year. The 12-week course is part of CARE (Creating Access to Regulated Employment), a program funded federally and by the province of Ontario.

Dy took the course evenings at CARE’s Toronto office while she was working as a nurse.

“It’s really very helpful,” said Dy, who works in the labour and delivery unit at Mount Sinai Hospital. “It can really gain you confidence, especially once you already start working ... It can make you understand the way the Canadian people are speaking the language.”

Created in 2001, the goal of CARE is to “move the immigrant nurse into the workplace as quickly as possible, ” according to executive director Gail Yardy.
Once internationally trained nurses are landed immigrants and have been recognized by the College of Nurses of Ontario, they are eligible for CARE, which also has a pharmacy program.

Foreign nurses who have relocated have access to a variety of CARE courses, depending on their language skills. The most basic is English for Nurses 1, then the more advanced English for Nurses 2.

Workplace Communication Skills for Internationally Educated Nurses builds on the first two courses, specifically for the hospital environment.

“The way the course is designed is not just strictly language, but order taking (over the phone),” said Yardy. “So you’re learning the style of health-care delivery at the same time you’re learning the language, because it’s easier to learn it in the context.”

The workplace communication course is available at various locations in London, Hamilton and Toronto. A new program is beginning today at George Brown College.source
