Certified Nursing Assistant program NSCC's Health & Human Services Division
    Thursday
In fall of 2007, NSCC's Health & Human Services Division launched a new version of its successful, long-time Certified Nursing Assistant program. The one-quarter program, offered fall, winter and spring, provides solid preparation for work in this high-demand healthcare field. Nursing assistants are employed in a variety of organizations, including hospitals, nursing homes and home healthcare agencies, helping to care for patients.

The program uses the I-Best model, combining English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction and nursing theory so that students can gain proficiency in English and learn job skills at the same time. Program faculty members have both ESL teaching skills and nursing backgrounds.

North's curriculum has a strong clinical component, with 72 hours of training at selected skilled nursing facilities. Students will receive excellent practical experience working with clients of all ages and ranges of disabilities and conditions. Students will also have access to the lab on campus.

At the conclusion of the quarter, successful students may apply to take the Washington State Certification test. Many graduates may want to continue their studies at North to prepare for the LPN program while working as nursing assistants.

To apply for the nursing assistant program, applicants must have a high school diploma or proof of GED completion and must take an English placement test (or submit test results), submit an on-site writing sample, have basic English proficiency in reading, writing and speaking. The testing criteria includes CASAS 220 minimum in reading and listening or Compass 40 on reading, or submission of college transcript of English 095, 096 or higher.

Applicants must also attend one information session. For currently scheduled information sessions, please see the Nursing Assistant Program page on the NSCC website.

For details about information sessions, contact Marcia Shaw, mshaw@sccd.ctc.edu. For information about the Nursing Assistant program, contact Kristin Distelhorst at kdistelhorst@sccd.ctc.edu or (206)528-4561.
